Shipping container house – it needs a name!
We have been asked what we are naming our ‘little’ project, a house made of shipping containers, so we are looking for ideas. We would appreciate any suggestions. Here’s a few pics for inspiration…
No, our approval went through in only three weeks. However, we spent a lot of time beforehand talking with the architect and engineer to get things right before the application went in.
Read your comment re. insulation. Given that you have had to meet exactly the same thermal requirements as any other residential structure/system, heat and cold are obviously being managed in your planning. As an added option, have you looked at any of the heat reflecting paints that are now on the market?
Hi David, when you mention containers to people they automatically think that they are just as bad as a shed, but we have found that the thicker steel isn’t as bad for heating up inside. I wonder if the paint they use on the containers has those insulating qualities already? So we have gone with ordinary 4 seasons exterior paint in a light colour which helps reflect some of the heat, but for the most part, the containers do it themselves. This, combined with the insulation used on the inside, should work out well.
Final ceiling height is the normal 2.4m(8ft). They are high cube containers, so they are 2.7m(9’6)overall height. So we get the 8ft ceilings with a small ceiling space for electrical, plumbing etc.
Yes, will hopefully be uploading some more photos tonight. We finished painting the outside yesterday. This evening we will be putting in the last windows and then i will be taking some more photos.
Ruth, Green Haven is a great name!
Robina, I would like to build something similar but on a smaller scale for our farm here in the USA. Would you mind sharing your engineer and architect contact info? How did you insulate your container house? Thanks much! Moira
Hi Moira, our architect for this project was Steve Gray at Hervey Bay Design Group. It was my own plan but he drew it up properly for us. You just have work with the size of the containers, but we have quite a few cutouts to extend the room sizes. Our engineer was Hal Buckley from VDM Consulting, Hervey Bay. This house is 230.8m2 in the living areas and 55.8m2 on verandahs and balcony. We are insulating with rockwool insulation (fibreglass?). It doesnt heat up as bad as everyone seems to think.
Hi All,
Sorry it’s been a while, but I’ve had trouble getting on. I’ve finally got here and updated some old pics and uploaded a few newer ones too! Hope you enjoy

Big, brash and beautiful, but does this rhododendron dominate too much? BTW we have heaps of similar ideas at http://theownerbuildernetwork.com.au/colour-in-landscaping/
Fantastic to see a project like this. Did you have to battle for building approval?

What a wonderful idea for a home! How about “Green Haven” !
This is a great name but after this weekend it wont be green anymore. I will upload more photos after this weekend.
Great job. Can I ask what your final ceiling height will be?

Hullo again Robina. Are you still planning on uploading some more photos? I’m really interested in this idea. Mayuri
